Ruffing Montessori Middle School Places at Power of the Pen State Tournament

The College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, hosted the 29th Annual Power of the Pen State Competition for Young Writers on Friday, May 23, 2014. The tournament is the culmination of twenty-five District and twelve Regional competitions held throughout the State of Ohio.  Approximately 750 writers from 270 schools participated in the all-day writing tournament.  Students from grades seven and eight competed in four 35-minute writing rounds and a “Power Round,” vying for trophies, certificates, cash prizes, and college scholarships valued at more than $100,000 for demonstrating excellence in writing. All writing was in response to prompts not known in advance and in the form of a narrative.  Guest author and keynote speaker Sharon M. Draper, author of over 100 award-winning books for young adults, buoyed the students. Vala Schriefer and Ellie Vahey represented Ruffing Montessori Middle School at the State Tournament. Both girls successfully competed at District and Regional tournaments to qualify for the State Finals.  Vala made the stage, as she placed 14th overall in the State.  Please join me congratulating Ellie and Vala.
