Affording a Ruffing Education

Ruffing Montessori School is committed to making its educational program accessible to a socio-economically diverse student body and family community. We strive to minimize potential financial barriers to a Ruffing education through a need-based financial aid process.

Regardless of need, financial aid awards are limited and will not exceed 50% of tuition. Ruffing requires that all families receiving assistance contribute at least 50% of the cost of tuition and 100% of non-tuition fees (supplies, after school programs, camps, etc.).

Ruffing has engaged the services of FAST (Financial Aid for School Tuition) to complete a financial analysis and to provide a recommended award amount for each applicant based on financial need. The School’s Financial Aid (FA) Committee considers this information when making an award determination. Awards are based on demonstrated financial need only. No performance-based or merit scholarships are available.

Note to New Student Applicants

The financial aid process is confidential and independent of the admission process — your application for a reduced tuition does not influence admission decisions. Those interested in applying for financial aid should do so concurrently with the admission application process. The FA Committee will not consider tuition assistance for new students until the child has been accepted for admission to the School. Once your child has been accepted to Ruffing, every effort is made to notify you immediately of the financial aid determination. If you have applied for a reduced tuition, you will not be asked to make an enrollment decision without knowing if an award is available to your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR FINANCIAL AID?
All students in Toddler Community through Middle School who qualify financially are eligible for a reduced tuition.

WHAT FACTORS ARE CONSIDERED WHEN DETERMINING
FINANCIAL AID AWARDS?

Affording a quality education takes planning, and most families employ several strategies to keep the costs within reach, including, but not limited to, a tuition payment plan, personal loan, or help from extended family members. In this planning, it is important to realize that the family bears the primary responsibility for financing a child’s education to the extent they are able.

Ruffing uses the calculations of FAST (Financial Aid for School Tuition) in determining the demonstrated need of a family. Other factors taken into consideration include information provided in tax documentation, the number of children enrolled at tuition-based schools, as well as extenuating circumstances. Additional criteria is used for those who are self-employed or own a business, or if there is a non-working parent by choice.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE ARE MULTIPLE HOUSEHOLDS?
(PARENTS ARE DIVORCED, SEPARATED, NEVER MARRIED, OR REMARRIED)
Each parent/guardian household must complete the FAST application. Consideration of the assets and available resources of both parents and their spouses or live-in partners is based on the belief that a family’s contribution should reflect the ability to contribute, not the willingness to contribute, which is a standard FAST policy. The School is not bound by any existing decrees, agreements or arrangements exempting one parent from financial responsibility for educational costs. All financial information is kept strictly confidential and at no time will one household have access to the others’ information. The School will make one financial aid award for each student. It is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to determine a payment schedule structure.

In instances where one parent has had no contact with the child for more than five years, the requirement that both parent/guardian households apply may be excused. Please contact the FA Committee to discuss.

WHAT IF WE DO NOT RECEIVE AS MUCH FINANCIAL AID AS WE ANTICIPATED?
Keeping in mind that the School has a finite pool of funds available to award, Ruffing may only be able to help with a portion of the demonstrated need. The goal is to help families bridge the gap between available resources and tuition. To appeal an award decision, you must submit a letter or email to the Financial Aid Committee by March 8, 2017 explaining what circumstances warrant reconsideration.

IS FINANCIAL AID RENEWED AUTOMATICALLY YEAR TO YEAR?
Families must re-apply each year because financial situations may change. However, once a family has received a reduced tuition, it is reasonable to expect that financial aid will be renewed, provided the family’s financial situation has not changed substantially and the recipient is in good academic standing with the School. Also, for returning families, tuition accounts need to be in good standing before an application for financial aid will be considered.
