Athletics are an important part of the Ruffing Middle School experience, building community for both those who play and those who cheer on their classmates.  Ruffing embraces the life lessons provided by interscholastic team sport and fields competitive teams in Soccer, Basketball, Archery and Ultimate Frisbee, with developmental teams in Volleyball and Cross Country.

Ruffing plays a fall schedule of at least six games against other independent schools in the Eastern Independent School League. Practices begin in September after school.  Skill development, ball handling and position play are emphasized in practice, while games give players the opportunity to fine tune skills and to work as a team to implement plays.

Ruffing fields both a girls and a boys team and competes in the Eastern Indpendent School League from November through February. Although the basketball team is primarily for seventh and eighth grade students, sixth grade students often join practices to learn basic skills and the team practice routines. Basketball practice is held before school (7:30 to 8:15 am), twice a week. The focus is on skill development, teamwork and concentration.

Archery is a popular sport for Ruffing students, with up to forty students practicing and participating in tournaments in the spring. Upper El and Middle School students are exposed to a unit on Archery during physical education, with proper equipment and detailed instruction. Interested students then practice weekly in the early spring and travel to Columbus for the annual Archery tournament.

Ultimate Frisbee

Competing in the Eastern Independent School League, Ruffing’s Ultimate Frisbee team is co-ed and consists of seventh and eighth grade students. Approximately ten games are played in the late spring.
