After Hours Activities (AHA!) at Ruffing

AHA! is an active after school enrichment program offered to currently enrolled Ruffing students in 3rd Year Children’s House and Extended Day through Grade 8.

AHA! complements our After Care program and offers students a wide variety of enrichment opportunities during after school hours. Families seeking additional after school programming may register their children for the classes listed below.

Students registered for full-time After Care and All Day Children’s House receive 50% reduction for one AHA! class each fall and winter session. Individual music lessons, Chess, Coding, Humans of Ruffing, Snapology Legos®, Tae Kwon Do and Tennis require full fees.

Rock Wall 3:30-4:30

Lower Elementary through Middle School

Learn climbing, traversing, knots, climbing commands, safety procedures and proper technique. Build upper and lower body strength while improving rock climbing skills in a supervised, encouraging environment. Climbing equipment is provided, but comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes are required.

Tennis Skills 3:30-4:30

Lower Elementary

This skills class is based on the most current research and techniques for introducing the game of tennis to students. The program will incorporate UTSA-approved, low compression, transitional, tennis balls and modified nets to teach students how to play tennis. All equipment will be provided by the Tennis Professional.

Humans of Ruffing Montessori School 3:30 - 4:30

Upper Elementary through Middle School

Based on the popular Humans of New York project, a photographic catalogue of New York City inhabitants, students will create their own Humans of Ruffing series. In partnership with the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning, formerly Young Audiences, students will learn about digital photography and how to use digital editing apps. They will also have the opportunity to present their photographs to the school and community, and have their work included in a “Humans of Ruffing” e-book.

Ruffing Montessori Book Club (Bi-Weekly) 3:30-4:30

Third Year through Upper Elementary

It’s a Battle of the Books! Students will read a selection of the best new books of the year and hold lively discussions on each to determine the group favorite. Together they will identify one book to “win the gold” and create a bracket for their new favorites.

Let it Sew! 3:30-4:30

Lower Elementary

Get crafty! Students practice art expression by creating their very own stuffed animals and decorations with felt, and will be introduced to a variety of sewing stitches while building eye –hand coordination. Participants also learn how to use different design templates, thread a needle, sew on accessories, and turn the corner with a blanket stitch.

Snapology of Cleveland Legos® 3:30-4:30

Lower Elementary through Upper Elementary

Snapology students will learn through play in this fun LEGO program! Instructors will introduce students to the world of robotics. Students will work in teams to create interactive and mechanical models inspired by adventures. Students will build robotic animals and more using LEGO bricks and easy-to-learn software! Students work with a partner in stations, and choose lessons and activities based on their interests.

Tae Kwon Do 3:30-4:30

Lower Elementary through Upper Elementary

This Korean Martial Art will improve strength, stamina, flexibility and concentration while children practice blocking techniques and self defense. Students may progress to earn a belt.

Tae Kwon Do is offered twice weekly to provide more flexibility to families and an opportunity for additional training to interested students. Students may register for either the Wednesday or Friday class or both. Students attending both classes may test for belt promotion more often each year than those attending one class per week.

Hispanic World 3:30-4:30

Lower Elementary

Learn the culture of Latin countries through fun games, songs, traditional dances, and cooking special dishes from these magnificent countries! One rule: Aquí solo se habla español (here, we speak only Spanish)!

Introduction to Coding and Programming 3:30-4:30

Fourth Year through Middle School

This course will introduce students to computer hardware, coding and programming, and give them the opportunity to learn computer science fundamentals through the creation of fun games and animations. Each student will build their own working computer to keep; learn how to write programs using Python Programming language; and run scripts that they write through a special version of Minecraft designed for beginning programmers.

Elementary Chess with The Knight School 3:30-4:45

Lower Elementary through Upper Elementary

The Knight School Elementary Chess is developmentally designed for 1st through 7th Year Students. The ground-breaking curriculum works backwards and results in amazing chess masters. Beginners are welcomed. All participants will receive their own chess set and chess bag, plus a Knight School T-shirt.
